LAGOS APC FACES INTERNAL CRISIS AHEAD OF LOCAL GOVERNMENT PRIMARY ELECTION
With the All Progressives Congress (APC) local government chairmanship primaries scheduled for May 10, 2025, tension is rising within the party in Lagos State as allegations of manipulation, imposition, and disenfranchisement threaten to tear the party apart.
Party insiders and observers have raised alarms over what they describe as a looming internal implosion if urgent steps are not taken by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and top APC leaders to restore confidence in the process. Many fear that if the alleged irregularities are not addressed, the situation could mirror the widespread discontent that contributed to the party’s poor performance in the 2023 general elections—potentially setting the stage for further setbacks in 2027.
There are mounting allegations that significant financial inducements—reportedly in the millions of naira—are being used to secure places on a pre-arranged list of chairmanship aspirants. Multiple sources within the party claim that several influential grassroots leaders were neither consulted nor involved in the decision-making process, deepening suspicions of favoritism and exclusion.
Adding to the controversy are reports that delegates will be allowed to vote at the APC secretariat on Acme Road, but will then be asked to vacate the venue immediately after voting. Critics argue that such a move would create a secretive atmosphere conducive to electoral manipulation and the announcement of pre-determined results.
Observers say that the party’s internal challenges have steadily increased since 2015, with each election cycle exposing deeper divisions and dissatisfaction among the party's base.
Political analysts warn that unless immediate steps are taken to uphold democratic principles and ensure the integrity of the primaries, the APC in Lagos could face severe consequences that go beyond just local government elections.
“A stitch in time saves nine,” said another party stakeholder. “Let the votes count, and Lagos APC will bounce back stronger. But if this trend continues, we risk alienating the very people who have built and sustained this party from the beginning.”
As the countdown to the primaries continues, all eyes are now on President Tinubu and the national leadership of the APC to intervene and steer the party away from what many fear could become a full-blown political crisis.
